It’s time to elect a city government. Voters are considered to be the watchdogs of democracy in this election festival held in the cities, but almost half of the voters celebrate this important day of election only as a holiday. The urban people who are said to be relatively more educated and aware are not serious about this election. The voting percentage in this election is less as compared to Lok Sabha, Vidhansabha and three-tier panchayat elections.
The Election Commission has been continuously appealing to the people to vote as much as possible. This exercise has started again in this election. The reason is clear that voters are showing less interest in this election. The Election Commission had shown utmost seriousness regarding the Lok Sabha Elections 2019. There were more than 90 crore voters in this election out of which 67.11 percent exercised their vote. In last year’s assembly elections in the state, the number of voters was more than 15 crore, out of which 60.61 percent voters cast their vote.

There was also a slight relief that there was an increase of .53 percent in this polling compared to the assembly elections held earlier in the year 2012. In the year 2012, there was 61.14 percent polling. However, at that time the number of voters was only about 14.16 crores. In the three-tier panchayat elections, this figure was beyond 70 percent.
Now look at the municipal elections, about which the voters are not serious. In the civic elections 2017, voting was held in three phases across the state. In the first phase, a total of 52.85 percent voters exercised their vote in 24 districts. In the second phase polling was held in 25 districts but the polling percentage fell further. A total of 48.65 percent polling could be done. When people were again made aware on this, elections were held in 26 districts in the third phase and the voting percentage went up to 58.65 percent. In all the phases of the entire state, the voting percentage was less than 54.
82 percent were literate, 38.7 percent voted
In the last election, there were many corporations where the number of educated people was more, but the voting was less. In Lucknow, despite 82 percent people being literate, the voting percentage was only 38.7 percent. Ghaziabad’s voting percentage was 45.10, Prayagraj’s was only 30.45 per cent. In such a situation, this time the challenge is that at least the voting percentage of the corporations should increase. People should be aware of this and reach the polling booths.
In Panchayat elections, then beyond 70
The most important voters are of the three-tier panchayat elections. In the three-tier panchayat elections held in the state in the year 2021, there was 71.72 percent voting. In all the phases the polling had crossed 70 percent and in one phase the polling was up to 73 percent. The more seriousness the voters show in this election to be held in District Panchayat, Area and Gram Panchayat in this election, the better results will come if the urban voters also show it in the urban elections.
